What to Expect:

Located at prestigious Passeig de Gràcia, Casa Amatller constitutes together with Casa Batlló and Casa Lleó-Morera, Barcelona’s so called ‘Manzana de la Discòrdia’ (bone of contention), a sign that the modernist buildings didn’t always find approval at the time of their construction. Today, the three Art Nouveau houses belong to Barcelona’s proud cultural heritage and attract thousands of visitors every year.

Commissioned by Antoni Amatller i Costa, a wealthy chocolatier and art collector, Casa Amatller was rebuilt between 1898 and 1900 by celebrated architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch, who turned it into one of the most remarkable showpieces of modernist architecture. The neo-classical building combines elements of Catalan modernism, like rich ornamentation, wrought iron works and stained glass windows, with influences of Dutch architecture. Great parts of the building’s ornaments refer to the history of the owner’s family and reflect his interests, like photography, travelling and art.

Between 2009 and 2014, Casa Amatller was restored according to original plans and invites you today to a tour around its museum. Its furnishings with original pieces and artwork as well as the informative video tour make it easy to imagine the life of the Amatller family in their residence in turn-of-the-century Barcelona.

Opening times: Monday to Sunday 10am to 6pm
The video-guided tour takes about 40 minutes and is available in English, Catalan, Spanish or French.
In order to protect the flooring, the museum doesn’t allow high-heeled shoes and visitors have to wear a protective cover over their shoes.
