What to expect

Combine a journey into the past with a spectacular view over Barcelona’s city centre during a visit to the Columbus Monument at the Ramblas.

Built for the Barcelona Universal Exposition 1888, the monument rises almost 60 metres above the ground and commemorates Columbus’ first voyage to America and that he reported his discovery to Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand V in Barcelona. The column of the monument is set on a richly decorated pedestal, whose eight sides are decorated with reliefs that depict important scenes of his journey. The top of the monument is crowned by a seven-metre-tall bronze statue, which shows Columbus pointing into the distance.

In the interior of the monument a lift brings the visitor up to the viewing platform with a 360° view over the surroundings. Enjoy the southern panorama with Montjuïc Hill and Barcelona’s port and see to the north the Gothic Quarter, the lively Ramblas and in the background majestic Sagrada Família.
