In 2009, the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau closed the doors of its modernist quarters and moved to a more modern building. Its long used facilities had become too small and outdated for modern medicine, the same reason that once prompted its construction. In four years of extensive restoration works, the former hospital buildings were given back their original splendour and reopened in 2014 as a cultural landmark, attracting visitors from all around the world due to its architectural as well as historical value.  

Built between 1902 and 1930, the complex replaced the hospital’s 500-year-old housing in Barcelona’s Raval district and was the answer to the city’s rapid growth and advances in medicine. It combined state of the art technology with the splendour of modernist architecture, that even today has lost nothing of its appeal. The new buildings, designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, were constructed according to the latest standards of hygiene without ignoring aesthetic aspects. Typical for modernist architecture, Santa Creu i Sant Pau is richly decorated with ornamental details like colourful mosaics, statues and stained glass windows, which refer to its history as well as religious context.

Today the former hospital has been given a new purpose as a centre of knowledge, housing amongst others, institutions of the United Nations and WHO. It hosts international seminars, congresses and meetings and has an active cultural programme. Its historical archive holds an outstanding collection of records, which documents more than 600 years of Catalan history.
