What to Expect

The Gran Teatre del Liceu is with its almost 2,300 seats one of the largest opera houses in Europe, attracting locals and tourist alike with a wide repertoire, which ranges from classical opera and operetta, to ballet and modern concert music. Go on a tour through the theatre, find out more about its eventful history and stunning architecture and discover the state-of-the-art technology, which hides behind the historic facade.

Opened in 1847, the Liceu has witnessed many historical events and lived political as well as social and cultural changes. Two times almost completely destroyed by fire, it has kept its role as one of the most important artistic and cultural centres of Barcelona and has presented such famous artist as Enrico Caruso, Plácido Domingo and Montserrat Caballé on its stage.

After the devastating fire in 1994, which only left the building’s facade and the Mirror Hall intact, the Liceu was rebuilt, maintaining its original design but also making necessary improvements to meet modern standards. Five years of extensive construction and renovation works have modernised the theatre’s technical stage and sound equipment as well as restored the theatre’s original splendour.
