A visit to Barcelona, capital of Catalan Modernism, brings you face to face with its Art Nouveau architecture, ever-present in famous buildings like, Casa Batlló and Casa Milà and closely linked to the movement’s figurehead Gaudí. However, the modernist movement went beyond architecture and assumed responsibility for every minute part of its creations. Gaudí didn’t design only the building of Casa Batlló, but also its doors, ceilings and furniture and accessories such as lamps, planters and curtains. 

The Museum of Modernism picks up on this integral concept of art and puts interior design centre stage. The exhibition displays a collection of 350 sculptures, paintings and pieces of furniture of modernist style, which used to be essential pieces of the decor in emblematic houses like Casa Batlló, Casa Lleó Morera and Casa Fargas. Opened in 2010, the private collection is ideally located in a restored warehouse in Barcelona’s modernist Eixample, where buildings by prestigious architects like Antoni Gaudí and Lluís Domenèch i Montaner bear witness to bourgeois life at the beginning of the 20th century and give Catalan identity an artistic form.
