What to Expect

Take a tour through the majestic city palace Güell, which doesn’t only represent the lifestyle of a family but also captures the atmosphere of turn-of-the-century Barcelona. Built between 1886 and 1890, Palau Güell was constructed in a time when the city was rapidly growing, bringing great social as well as cultural and urban changes about. This transformation of Barcelona into a modern city is reflected in Gaudís architecture, which breaks with old conventions and looks for new forms of expressing itself.

Commissioned by Eusebi Güell, a Catalan industrialist and Gaudí‘s long-term patron, the city palace was designed to meet the family’s daily needs as well as fullfill their demands as host of Barcelona’s high society. Gaudí gave major structural elements an equally important decorative function and combined classical elements with ideas of the upcoming modernism. Innovative in its use of light and space, was the design of the house inspired by the Mudéjar style of architecture of southern Spain and impresses the visitor with its richly decorated walls and ceilings and use of valuable materials like marble, alabaster and stained glass windows.

Owing to its exceptional architectural value, Palau Güell was declared part of the UNESCO world heritage in 1984 and receives today thousands of visitors. A tour through the palace takes you on an informative audio tour from the basement to the stately main floor and the roof-top terrace with its fancyful chimneys and ventilation towers, which already offer a glimpse of Gaudí’s future works.
